Mass, Pressure and Diffusion competition for schools – Winners Announced
Swavesey students win science equipment for school.

A team of pupils from Swavesey Village College has won £1000 of new key stage 3 science equipment for their school in Michell Instruments’ second science and technology competition for year 7 and 8 students in Cambridgeshire.
The competition was organised by Ely-based sensing and instrumentation manufacturer, Michell Instruments. They set the entrants the task to design an experiment, conduct it and report on the results. Swavesey’s winning team chose to demonstrate the conservation of mass during reactions using marble chips and hydrochloric acid to create carbon dioxide.
Five schools entered the competition, with a total of 15 teams. The runners up were teams from Ely College, both with experiments to demonstrate diffusion.
The competition was judged by Dr Stephanie Bell from the National Physical Laboratory; Dr Peter Wothers from Cambridge University; Dr Chris Smith from the Naked Scientists; John Elworthy, Editor of the Ely Standard and Mike Bannister, CEO of Michell Instruments.
Michell’s Science competition is part of their on-going programme of schools outreach activities which also include offering work experience placements and participation in careers events in local schools.
